There are many more sayings that come to us from the middle ages.   Here's one I like:

In the middle ages, men preferred their prostitutes fat.   When men would ferry the whores from one side of the Thames to the other, it was said they had "a tough 'ho to row."   Over the centuries, this phrase got turned around until, today, when we speak of a difficult task, we refer to "a tough row to hoe."
